Inspired by Jesmyn Ward’s Salvage the Bones, I designed Mo & Vio Serif which is a modern text face equipped with the combination of sharpness and smoothness. One of the most important theme in Salvage the Bones is the coexistence of love and violence in motherhood. The face strives to create an exquisite description of the collision. It applies burnished curves to illustrate the tenderness and beauty of love while constructing sharp serifs to reveal bloodshed. They, together, presents a paradoxical harmony. Plus, tall x-height and open counters allows for delicate pockets of air to exist between forms, thus maintaining high legibility at smaller sizes. Moderate contrast and clear constructions establish an ideal reading experience for both print and screens.
